Berwick's Old Fire Hall Site to Undergo Environmental Assessment

"We've ordered a comprehensive environmental assessment of the old fire site to know the concentrations and extent of contaminants recently found on the property," says Deputy Mayor Anna Ashford Morton. She adds, "And once we learn the facts, Council will weigh its options". Estimated cost for the level-2 testing project is pegged at $10,000. A resolution approving the expenditure was passed by Council at its meeting of February 9, 2010.

Berwick and District's Volunteer Fire Department moved to its new home in 2008. The facility has attracted wide-spread acclaim for its design and environmentally green features. The old fire hall, built in the mid 60s, was put up for sale on the market last year with a plan to apply the proceeds to the debt incurred for the new facility.

Negotiations for the sale of the old property ended when a preliminary environmental check revealed the presence of contaminants--hydro carbons. "Naturally, we were disappointed," Ashford-Morton goes on, "because we were looking forward to seeing a transformation of the old building into an attractive new development.

The full environmental assessment will involve boring holes into the soil in a pattern of concentric circles and at various depths to get the complete picture. The history of institutional and commercial activities on the site, going back decades, may also come into play. "Until we get the conclusive results of the analysis, comments on how serious the contamination may or may not be, is pure speculation", said Deputy Mayor Ashford-Morton.

Once we get the results, we'll share them, look at our options, seek public input, weigh the risks, and take a course of action we believe fits the best interests of our community.

H1N1 & Seasonal Flu Vaccine Clinics

Please be advised that Nova Scotians can now be vaccinated against the H1N1 and seasonal flu at the same clinics. Clinics in Berwick will be held at The Berwick Fire Hall on November 5 and November 24th from 1-8 pm.
